Reglan is a gastrointestinal stimulant and antinauseant used for the treatment of symptoms of GERD and reduce the symptoms of nausea, vomiting, heartburn, prolonged fullness after meals and a condition called as diabetic gastroparesis.

How it is taken

Reglan must be taken by mouth about 30 minutes before a meal. In some cases, it may even take weeks for your condition to improve. Take it for the entire duration of treatment preferably at the same time everyday.

Do not stop without consulting your doctor.

Missed Dosage

If you miss a dose of Reglan then you may take it as soon as you remember and adjust the remaining doses accordingly. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose then you may skip this dose and continue with the regular dosage. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.
 

Overdose

A Reglan overdose might require immediate medical attention and often has symptoms like agitation, confusion, and drowsiness, and muscle restlessness, unusual movement of eyes, face, or limbs.
 

Warnings/Precautions
Discuss with your doctor about any prior medical condition that you may have including allergies to medicines, food or other substances, if you have depression, asthma, heart failure, high blood pressure, diabetes, Parkinson disease, blood problems (eg, porphyria), kidney problems, or low levels of an enzyme called Reglan reductase.

You must not take if you are allergic to any ingredient in it or f you have seizures (eg, epilepsy), bleeding, blockage, or perforation in your stomach or intestines, or tumors on your adrenal gland (pheochromocytoma), if you are taking cabergoline, pergolide or medicines, such as phenothiazines, that may cause extrapyramidal reactions (abnormal, involuntary muscle movements of the head, neck, or limbs).

If you are pregnant or suspect that you are, then stop using Reglan and contact your doctor immediately to discuss the risk to your baby.

It is unknown whether Reglan is secreted in breast milk. Avoid breast feeding while using the drug.

Certain drugs can interact with Reglan and hence, mention clearly to your doctor or pharmacist all medicines, dietary supplements and herbal prescriptions that you are taking.

Reglan

Reglan may also cause a fatal syndrome called Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS). This has symptoms like ever, stiff muscles, confusion, abnormal thinking, fast or irregular heartbeat, and sweating.

Reglan should not be used in children younger than 15 years of age as the safety and effectiveness of the drug have not been confirmed yet.

Ensure that you inform your doctor and your dentist about Reglan before receiving any form of medical treatment or dental treatment or emergency surgery.

Periodic lab tests including liver and kidney function tests may be recommended to monitor your health while taking the drug. Ensure that you do not miss any lab tests.
 

Possible Side Effects
Some of the common side effects of are agitation, anxiety, breast growth, changes in menstrual flow, confusion, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, foot tapping, frequent urination, headache, inability to sit still, jitteriness, lack of energy, loss of bladder control, nausea, pacing, restlessness, sleeplessness, spontaneous flow of breast milk, tiredness. Please contact your doctor if the symptoms persist or become bothersome.

Other severe side effects include allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), altered mental abilities, including lack of response to surroundings, breathing problems, depression with thoughts of suicide, fever, fluid retention, hallucinations, hives, impotence, increased body heat, increased heart rate, involuntary movements of tongue, face, mouth or jaw (eg, sticking out of the tongue, puffing of cheeks, puckering of mouth, chewing movements), sometimes with involuntary movements of the arms and legs, irregular heart rhythm, irregular pulse and blood pressure, mood changes, muscle rigidness, muscle twitching, rash, seizures, slow movements with tremor, sweating, swelling in the throat area, tightness in the lungs, unusual or unexplained vision changes, yellowing of the skin or eyes.

You must seek medical attention immediately if any of these side effects occur.
