Proventil is a bronchodilator that is used to treat asthma or prevent other airway diseases like bronchospasm and exercise-induced bronchospasm. Proventil relaxes the airways and allows more airflow into the lungs.

How it is taken

The best way to use Proventil is as recommended by your doctor. You may also check the medicine label for exact dosage instructions.

This drug is strictly for inhalation only. Avoid getting it into the eyes.

You must not use Proventil if it contains particles, is cloudy or discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged.

To use Proventil, twist open the top of the vial and pour the entire contents into the nebulizer reservoir.

Connect the nebulizer reservoir to the mouthpiece or face mask. Connect the nebulizer to the compressor.
Sit in a comfortable, upright position. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth (or put on the face mask) and turn on the nebulizer.

Breathe as calmly, deeply, and evenly as possible until no more mist is formed in the nebulizer chamber (about 5 to 15 minutes).

Clean the nebulizer according to the instructions. Failure to properly clean the nebulizer could lead to bacteria entering the medicine.

This may lead to an infection. To avoid bacteria entering the medicine, use the entire contents right after opening the vial for the first time.

Drug Class & Mechanism

Proventil is a sympathomimetic (beta agonist) bronchodilator that is used to clear the airways and allow more air to flow in and out of it.

Missed Dosage

If you miss a dose of Proventil then you may take it as soon as you remember and adjust the remaining doses accordingly. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose then you may skip this dose and continue with the regular dosage. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.

Storage

Store it at room temperature (between between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C) in an air tight container protecting it from direct exposure to light, heat and moisture. Keep away from pets and children.

 Warnings/Precautions

Discuss with your doctor about any prior medical condition that you may have including allergies to medicines, food or other substances, if you have a history of heart problems, (eg, fast or irregular heartbeat, heart failure), blood vessel problems, high blood pressure, or low blood potassium levels, if you have a history of seizures, diabetes, an overactive thyroid, kidney problems, or an adrenal gland tumor (pheochromocytoma), if you have ever had an unusual reaction to another sympathomimetic medicine (eg, pseudoephedrine), f you are taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) (eg, phenelzine), or tricyclic antidepressant (eg, amitriptyline), or if you have taken either of these medicines within the last 14 days.

You must not take if you are allergic to any ingredient in it or you are using another short-acting sympathomimetic bronchodilator (eg, metaproterenol) or epinephrine.

If you are pregnant or suspect that you are, then stop using Proventil and contact your doctor immediately.

It is unknown whether Proventil is secreted in breast milk. Avoid breast feeding while using the drug.

Certain drugs can interact with Proventil and hence, mention clearly to your doctor or pharmacist all medicines, dietary supplements and herbal prescriptions that you are taking, especially any of the following.

Diuretics (eg, furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide) because it increases the risk of low blood potassium levels.

Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitors (eg, entacapone), epinephrine, MAOIs (eg, phenelzine), short-acting sympathomimetic bronchodilators (eg, metaproterenol), stimulants (eg, amphetamine), sympathomimetics (eg, pseudoephedrine), or tricyclic antidepressants (eg, amitriptyline) because it increases the risk of experiencing the side effects of the drug.

Beta-blockers (eg, propranolol) because it decreases the effectiveness of the solution.

Digoxin because Proventil decreases its effectiveness.

Ensure that you inform your doctor and your dentist about before receiving any form of medical treatment or dental treatment or emergency surgery.
 

 Possible Side Effects

Some of the common side effects of are Cough, dizziness, headache, nausea, nervousness, sinus inflammation, sore or dry throat, tremor, trouble sleeping, unusual taste in mouth, vomiting. Please contact your doctor if the symptoms persist or become bothersome.

Other severe side effects include severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), chest pain, ear pain, fast or irregular heartbeat, new or worsened trouble breathing, pounding in the chest, severe headache or dizziness, unusual hoarseness, wheezing.

You must seek medical attention immediately if any of these side effects occur.
