Drug Uses

Propecia is used to cure different types of male pattern baldness typically on the vertex (top of head) and anterior mid–scalp area (middle front of head). It  is not clear whether the drug can be used to cure a receding hairline on the forehead. The drug is strictly to be used by men and should not be used by women or children.

How it is taken

Propecia is to be taken once a day with or without a meal. However, you may take it exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

It is recommended that you continue to use Propecia for the complete duration of the treatment even if you see results after a while. Do not discontinue treatment without talking to your doctor.

Missed Dosage

You should try and take your doses regularly. But if you do miss a dose, then you may take it as soon as you remember and adjust your remaining doses. If it’s nearly time for your next dose, you may skip it and continue with your regular dose. But do not take a double dose.

Overdose

Seek medical attention immediately if you suspect an overdose as the symptoms of an overdose are not known.

Discuss with your doctor if you are planning to become pregnant or are pregnant or breast feeding, liver problems, a narrow urinary tract, prostate cancer  and liver problems.

Certain drugs can interact with Propecia and hence, mention clearly to your doctor or pharmacist all medicines, dietary supplements and herbal prescriptions that you are taking.

Propecia is in the FDA Pregnancy X category which means that it can cause serious birth defects in an unborn fetus. Pregnant women must not handle the drug as it can be absorbed through the skin. While the tablet is coated to prevent this, handling a crushed tablet can prove to be harmful.

It is unknown whether the medication passes into breast milk, so avoid this medication if you are breast feeding.
 

Propecia may cause an allergic reaction leading to symptoms like difficulty in breating, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, face or hives. However, these symptoms can be treated.

Other severe side effects include breast enlargement, nipple discharge, impotency, lack of erection, low libido and decreased volume of ejaculate. Speak to your doctor if you notice any of these symptoms.
