Drug Uses

Mevacor is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor that belongs to the member of the drug class of statins used for lowering cholesterol. It is combined with an appropriate diet. It may also be used to reduce the risk of heart attacks, reduce angina, slow blood vessel blockage and reduce the risk of surgery.

How it is taken

Mevacor can be taken by mouth with food to avoid an upset stomach.

Take it for the entire duration of treatment preferably at the same time every day. Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juices while taking the drug. Do not stop without consulting your doctor.

The best way to use the drug is as recommended by your doctor.

Missed Dosage

If you miss a dose of Mevacor then you may take it as soon as you remember and adjust the remaining doses accordingly. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose then you may skip this dose and continue with the regular dosage. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.

Overdose

If overdose is suspected, then seek medical attention immediately.

Warnings/Precautions

Discuss with your doctor about any prior medical condition that you may have including allergies to medicines, food or other substances, if you have low blood pressure, a serious infection, kidney problems, diabetes, or a history of seizures, if you are very ill, have certain muscle problems (e.g., pain, weakness), or have metabolism, hormonal, or electrolyte problems, if you drink alcohol or have a history of liver problems or alcohol abuse, have a certain type of high cholesterol (homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia), have had an organ transplant or have recently had major surgery or a serious injury.

You must not take if you are allergic to any ingredient in it or if you have liver problems or unexplained abnormal liver function tests, if you are taking a macrolide antibiotic (e.g., clarithromycin, erythromycin), an HIV protease inhibitor (e.g., ritonavir), itraconazole, ketoconazole, mibefradil, nefazodone, or telithromycin.

If you notice any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness then report to your doctor straight away.

Take the diet and exercise program recommended by your doctor.

If you are pregnant or suspect that you are, then stop using Mevacor and contact your doctor immediately.

It is unknown whether Mevacor is secreted in breast milk. Avoid breast feeding while using the drug.

Certain drugs can interact with Mevacor and hence, mention clearly to your doctor or pharmacist all medicines, dietary supplements and herbal prescriptions that you are taking.

Mevacor should not be used in children below 10 years of age as the safety and effectiveness of the drug have not been confirmed yet.

Ensure that you inform your doctor and your dentist about Mevacor before receiving any form of medical treatment or dental treatment or emergency surgery.

Periodic lab tests may be recommended to monitor your health while taking the drug. Ensure that you do not miss any lab tests.

It has been noted that elderly patients are more sensitive to the side effects of the drug. They might need a dosage adjustment or special monitoring throughout the treatment.

Possible Side Effects

One of the common side effects is constipation. Please contact your doctor if the symptom persists or becomes bothersome.

Other severe side effects include (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), chest pain, dark urine, muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness (with or without fever or fatigue), pale stools, red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin, severe stomach pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes.

You must seek medical attention immediately if any of these side effects occur.
