Drug Uses

Glucophage is an oral anti-diabetic drug from the biguanide class that is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes along with a combination of other medicines and a proper diet.

How it is taken

Take it as directed by your doctor. Drink plenty of fluids while taking Glucophage and take it on a regular schedule every day.

Missed Dosage

If you miss a dose of, then you may take it as soon as you remember and adjust the remaining doses accordingly. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose then you may skip this dose and continue with the regular dosage. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.

Overdose

An overdose of Glucophage can cause a potentially fatal condition called lactic acidosis. Other symptoms like dizziness or lightheadedness, fast or difficult breathing, general feeling of being unwell, muscle pain or tenderness, slow or irregular heartbeat, unusual drowsiness, unusual stomach discomfort, unusual weakness or tiredness, feeling of being unusually cold may also be noted. Seek medical attention immediately if you suspect an overdose.

Warnings/Precautions
Discuss with your doctor about any prior medical condition that you may have including allergies to medicines, food or other substances, if you have a history of heart problems, lung or breathing problems, thyroid problems, stomach or bowel problems (eg, paralysis, blockage), adrenal or pituitary problems, or lactic acidosis, if you have vomiting, diarrhea, poor health or nutrition, low blood calcium or vitamin B12 levels, or anemia, or if you are dehydrated, have an infection, fever, recent injury, or moderate to severe burns, you drink alcohol or have a history of alcohol abuse, are taking a beta–blocker or you will be having surgery or certain lab procedures.

You must not take if you are allergic to any ingredient in it or have low blood oxygen levels, kidney or liver problems, high blood ketone or acid levels (eg, diabetic ketoacidosis), have had a stroke or a recent heart attack, or you are in shock or if you are 80 years old or older and have not had a kidney function test.

If you are pregnant or suspect that you are, then stop using Glucophage and contact your doctor immediately.

Glucophage must be combined with a strong diet and exercise program.

You must avoid drinking too much alcohol while using the drug.

Certain drugs can interact with and hence, mention clearly to your doctor or pharmacist all medicines, dietary supplements and herbal prescriptions that you are taking.

Glucophage may commonly cause stomach upset, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea at the beginning of treatment. If you develop unusual or unexpected stomach problems, or if you develop stomach problems later during treatment, contact your doctor at once. This may be a sign of lactic acidosis.

You must constantly monitor your blood sugar levels and carry an ID card that says that you are diabetic.

It is unknown whether is Glucophage secreted in breast milk. Avoid breast feeding while using the drug.

Glucophage should not be used in children less than 10 years of age as the safety and effectiveness of the drug have not been confirmed yet.

Ensure that you inform your doctor and your dentist about before receiving any form of medical treatment or dental treatment or emergency surgery.

Periodic lab tests including Blood Sugar count may be recommended to monitor your health while taking the drug. Ensure that you do not miss any lab tests.

It has been noted that elder patients are more sensitive to the side effects of the drug. They might need a dosage adjustment or special monitoring throughout the treatment.

Possible Side Effects
Some of the common side effects of are diarrhea, gas, headache, indigestion, nausea, and stomach upset, temporary metallic taste, vomiting. Please contact your doctor if the symptoms persist or become bothersome.

Other severe side effects include allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), chest pain or discomfort, dizziness or lightheadedness, fast or difficult breathing, feeling of being unusually cold, fever, chills, or persistent sore throat, general feeling of being unwell, muscle pain or weakness, slow or irregular heartbeat, unusual drowsiness, unusual or persistent stomach pain or discomfort, unusual tiredness or weakness.

You must seek medical attention immediately if any of these side effects occur.
