Drug Name

Flovent inhaler is a corticosteroid that reduces the inflammation in the airways and allows more air to reach the lungs. It is used to prevent and reduce the frequency of bronchial asthma attacks.

How it is taken

Use Flovent as directed by your doctor.

Shake the container gently before each use. Clear your nose by blowing it if you are using a nose spary. Sit down and tilt your head back slightly. Place the tip of the spray container into the nostril. Using a finger from your other hand, press against the opposite nostril to close it. Breathe gently through the open nostril and squeeze the spray container at the same time. If you are using more than 1 spray, wait for 1 to 2 minutes between sprays. After using the medicine, rinse the tip of the spray unit in hot water and dry with a clean tissue to prevent contamination.

Use the inhaler for the complete course of treatment to derive benefits from it. Take it at the same time each day to avoid missing any doses.

Missed Dosage

If you miss a dose of Flovent, then you may take it as soon as you remember and adjust the remaining doses accordingly. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose then you may skip this dose and continue with the regular dosage. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.

Storage

Store it at room temperature (between between 39 and 86 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C) in an air tight container protecting it from direct exposure to light, heat and moisture. Keep away from pets and children.

 Warnings/Precautions

Discuss with your doctor about any prior medical condition that you may have including allergies to medicines, food or other substances, you have active or inactive tuberculosis or a positive skin test for tuberculosis, you have infections of the respiratory tract, untreated fungal or bacterial infections, parasitic or viral infections, measles, chickenpox, herpes simplex in or around the eye, or recently received a vaccination, you have diarrhea, you have glaucoma or cataracts.

You must not take if you are allergic to any ingredient in it or are having a severe asthma attack requiring quick relief

If you are pregnant or suspect that you are, then stop using Flovent and contact your doctor immediately.

Certain drugs can interact with Flovent and hence, mention clearly to your doctor or pharmacist all medicines, dietary supplements and herbal prescriptions that you are taking especially certain medicines that act on the liver (eg, protease inhibitors [eg, ritonavir], ketoconazole).

It is unknown whether is Flovent secreted in breast milk. Avoid breast feeding while using the drug.

Possible Side Effects

Some of the common side effects of are aches and pains, asthma symptoms, bronchitis, changes in or loss of senses of smell and taste, cough, diarrhea, dizziness, fever, flu-like symptoms (headache, tiredness, muscle aches, fever), infection of the nose and throat, nasal irritation or burning, nausea, nosebleed, runny nose, sore throat, stomach pain, vomiting.

Please contact your doctor if the symptoms persist or become bothersome.

Other severe side effects include severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), cataracts, growth suppression in children, hoarseness, increased pressure in the eye, infection or pain in the nose or throat, nasal septum perforation, repeated nosebleeds, voice changes.

You must seek medical attention immediately if any of these side effects occur.
