Drug Uses

Augmentin is a penicillin antibiotic that is usually used in the treatment of certain bacterial infections (lower respiratory, middle ear, sinus, skin, and urinary tract infections).

How it is taken

You may take Augmentin with or without a meal. Ensure that you complete the full dosage schedule even if you feel better in a few days. Never take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Missed Dosage

If you miss a dose of, then you may take it as soon as you remember and adjust the remaining doses accordingly. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose then you may skip this dose and continue with the regular dosage. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.

Overdose

Some of the symptoms of an Augmentin overdose include Diarrhea, drowsiness, decreased urination, kidney problems, stomach pain and unusual drowsiness. Seek medical attention immediately if overdose is suspected.

Storage

Store it at room temperature (between between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) in an air tight container protecting it from direct exposure to light, heat and moisture. Keep away from pets and children.
 

Discuss with your doctor about any prior medical condition that you may have including allergies to medicines, food or other substances, a history of allergies, asthma, hay fever, or hives, kidney problems or gonorrhea and liver problems.

Certain drugs can interact with Augmentin and hence, mention clearly to your doctor or pharmacist all medicines, dietary supplements and herbal prescriptions that you are taking, especially any of the following.

If you are pregnant or suspect that you are, then consult your doctor about the risks involved before using Augmentin.

 It is unknown whether Augmentin is secreted in breast milk. Avoid breast feeding while using the drug.

Augmentin is an antibiotic and cannot be used to cure viral infections. Long term use of Augmentin can lead to a second infection with the bacteria becoming resistant to the drug. Inform your doctor if this occurs.

Some patients develop stomach pain or cramps, severe diarrhea, or bloody stools while using Augmentin. Contact your doctor promptly if this occurs.

Do not take Augmentin if you are taking a tetracycline antibiotic, if you have recently received or will be receiving live oral typhoid vaccine or have infectious mononucleosis (mono).

Augmentin may lead to a discoloration of the tooth in some patients. This can be removed by brushing or dental cleaning.

Periodic lab tests (liver tests, kidney tests and CBC) may be recommended to monitor your health while taking the drug. Ensure that you do not miss any lab tests.

Maintain caution while using in children who are below 10 years of age. Do not use Augmentin in children who weigh below 40 kgs.

Some of the common side effects of Augmentin are diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.

Other severe side effects include allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), bloody stools, confusion, dark urine, fever, chills, or persistent sore throat, red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin, seizures, severe diarrhea, stomach pain or cramps, unusual bruising or bleeding, vaginal discharge or irritation, yellowing of the skin or eyes.

You must seek medical attention immediately if this occurs.
