Drug Uses

Altace is primarily used in the treatment of high blood pressure but it may also be used to treat congestive heart disease and reduce the chances of heart attack, stroke and death in people 55 years or older and improve chances of survival after a heart attack.

Usage

Take Altace exactly as prescribed to you by your doctor. Some people have difficulty swallowing the capsule. In such an event, you may break the capsule and mix the content with water or 4 oz of applesauce or half a glass (4oz/120ml) of water or apple juice.

You can store this mixture in a refrigerator for up to 48 hours.

However, ensure that you drink the entire mixture to get the full dosage.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, then you may take it as soon as you remember. However, space out your remaining doses accordingly. Do not take a double dose.

Overdose

The usual side effects are dizziness and weakness. Seek medical attention immediately if you suspect an overdose.

Do not use the drug if you are allergic to any ingredient in it or are allergic to ACE inhibitors or if you have the following. A history of angioedema (swelling of the face, tongue, lips and throat) caused as a reaction to ACE inhibitors, liver problems, kidney problems (transplant, dialysis), heart problems, blood pressure problems, high blood potassium levels, low blood sodium levels, severe autoimmune disease, lupus, scleroderma (a skin disease), or bone marrow depression.

Altace should not be used after the 3rd month of pregnancy as it can cause fetal damage.

If you are pregnant or suspect that you are, then stop using Altace. It is unknown whether Altace is secreted in breast milk. Avoid breast feeding while using the drug.

Altace may increase your sensitivity towards the sun. So it is recommended that you avoid direct exposure to the sun or sun lamps. You may use a sunscreen or wear protective clothing.

Certain drugs can interact with Altace and hence, mention clearly to your doctor or pharmacist all medicines, dietary supplements and herbal prescriptions that you are taking, especially any of the following.

If you have a dry consistent cough then please consult your doctor.

Dehydration, excessive sweating, or diarrhea can lead to a fall in blood pressure. There may also be an occasional instance of lightheadedness, fainting and weakness. Consult your doctor if any of this occurs.

Periodic lab tests may be recommended to monitor your health while taking the drug. Ensure that you do not miss any lab tests.

Some of the common side effects of Altace are diarrhea, dizziness or lightheadedness when sitting up or standing, feeling of a whirling motion, headache, nausea, persistent dry cough, tiredness, vomiting and weakness.

Other severe side effects include allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), bruising or bleeding more easily, chest pain, difficulty swallowing, fainting, fever or sore throat, hoarseness, irregular or slow heartbeat, shortness of breath, stomach pain or tenderness, unusual tiredness or weakness, yellowing of the skin or eyes.

You must seek medical attention immediately if this occurs.
